Make-up artists put the finishing touches on Kevin Derr, who performs the stunt scenes for the actor who plays the villain Strickland in the futuristic action film "The Surrogates" being filmed Tuesday behind the Draper mill in Hopedale. It was the first of six days of filming.

HOPEDALE —
The set for "The Surrogates" looks like a jumble, fit for the sci-fi thriller. Post-apocalyptic would be an appropriate adjective if the plot involved an apocalypse.

The movie, starring Bruce Willis, started filming at the Draper mill complex yesterday. The morning started with a staged helicopter crash, followed by a foot chase.

The crew will likely be there through early next week, and Willis will be on set the final few days.
In the afternoon, the production crew allowed the Daily News to tour the set, hidden behind fences and closed to the public.

There were elaborately staged, empty cargo bays stacked high at angles; cars flipped over and piled on top of each other; a yellow school bus without its wheels; and a massive mound of bricks and dirt, to which crew members kept adding more bricks.

The heavy-duty props gave way to shards of building facades, constructed during the past few weeks, as well as used appliances, glass jugs, old water bottles, furniture and plastic tarps draped over huts. The Draper mill, with some missing window panes and boarded-up windows, and a weathered facade, looked like an appropriate backdrop from afar.

It was all part of a fictional outside world that, in the near future, has devolved as humans remain shuttered in their apartments and only interact through their surrogates, explained movie publicist Ernie Malik.

In the movie, Willis, playing an FBI agent, ventures outside for the first time in years after his surrogate is injured in the chase scene partially being filmed here. The chase scene was also filmed in Lynn, said Malik, one of several locales the movie is using around Massachusetts.

After more than an hour of preparation, a scene was ready for filming. One of Willis' two stunt doubles, Chris Gordon, wearing a tattered FBI jacket, quickly scrambled up some cargo bays. It lasted no more than 10 seconds. Brief applause followed.

A second take was being readied when ominous-looking clouds and a heavy downpour arrived. Crew, extras and reporters ran for cover.

HOPEDALE — Bruce Willis' new movie - or "the circus," as production staff jokingly described it yesterday - will start filming June 24 at the Draper mill complex and likely last a week.

There will be explosions, though minor, as part of a helicopter chase scene being filmed there. Bruce Willis will be on the set for the final few days, but, staff cautioned, probably not walking around downtown.

"We want to thank you for allowing us to come visit and be your guests," Benjamin Dewey, assistant location manager for "The Surrogates," told people during an informational meeting. "The oldest analogy is we are the circus that comes to town, but we also have a lot of work that needs to be done."

In a sign of how much interest the movie is creating, nearly as many people attended the meeting as last month's annual Town Meeting.

Among the questions people had: Yes, there will likely be a reserved spot to watch the filming from, but, no, extras are not needed (the production is required to use Screen Actors Guild members). And heartthrob Ashton Kutcher, husband of Willis' ex-wife, Demi Moore, will not be there.

On the logistical side, filming will only happen on the Draper property, no roads will be closed, and the crew will usually arrive shortly before 7 a.m. and the workday will last about 12 hours, staff said. Residents at Atria Draper Place, the assisted-living facility across the street, will also be warned before any explosions happen.

Dewey said he first saw the Draper complex, in the center of town, in January, while scouting another location in Hopedale. He said the factory building is a "great backdrop" for the action scene.

"We were looking for a site that had a distinguishing piece of architecture and this certainly has that," he said, and an open space where the crew could build a set. Construction has been happening behind the building for at least the past two weeks.

The scene being filmed here is the end of a helicopter chase that is also being shot in a few other Massachusetts locales, including Boston.

The helicopter's crash is a computer-generated effect. But its aftermath involves pre-wrecked parts going through part of the set, some low-grade bombs, a foot chase through a "cat-and-mouse maze" and a hill of 1,200 rubber rocks "so Bruce Willis won't hurt himself tumbling down," staff said.

"It should be a very, very exciting set," said Allen Hall, the special effects director. "We all realize how precious your community is to you, and we're on our toes not to offend anybody and will do our job as fast as possible," he said.

Neither the Draper factory nor other buildings would be damaged, he said.

The production will pay for the police and fire details it uses, but the town will not directly benefit financially from the filming. Some crew will be staying at local hotels and eating at local restaurants.

Overall, Dewey said, the film wants to keep as low a profile as possible, with representatives saying they are trying to strike a "balance between public outreach and doing our work. We'll be polite but also focused on what we need to get done."

"The Surrogates," a sci-fi thriller, is set in the near future, a time when humans interact through surrogate robots. Willis plays a cop who investigates the murders of other people's surrogates. The movie is based on a graphic novel of the same name and also stars Ving Rhames and Radha Mitchell, among others.

The film's second unit, consisting of the stunt and photo doubles, will film from June 24 to June 28, production staff said. Its first unit, which includes the star actors, is expected to arrive on June 30 and film through July 2.

HOPEDALE — If anyone can bring high-wire action to the Draper mill complex, it's probably actor Bruce Willis.

Scenes for Willis' new movie, "The Surrogates," a sci-fi thriller, will be filmed at the mill later this month, town officials and the production company have confirmed. The movie has been shooting around the state since April.

A set is being constructed behind the mill's Hopedale Street wing this week, and there are also several used Boston Police cruisers on site. People are not disclosing exactly when filming will begin, but Town Coordinator Eugene N. Phillips said it will be the second half of this month.

Bruce Willis, whose credits include the "Die Hard" action series, "Pulp Fiction" and "12 Monkeys," will be on the set, said the movie's publicist, Ernie Malik. Malik added that an action scene will be filmed at the mill.
"It worked visually for what we need to shoot this, which is a big action scene - a helicopter chasing a motorcycle, and then the aftermath," he said about why the mill was chosen.

Town officials will host a meeting June 12 at 7 p.m. in the high school to update people about the production and answer questions.

The massive empty mill, in the middle of town, was the site of the Draper Corp. and is now the subject of a long-running, ambitious plan to redevelop it. First American Realty Inc. of Worcester, which owns the mill, did not return a message left about the filming. Security for the movie asked a reporter to leave the property this week, saying it is a closed set.

"The Surrogates" is the latest movie to be filmed in the Boston area in the past two years since the Legislature approved a tax break to entice more production companies to film here. The state provides up to a 25 percent tax credit on expenses and salaries, and a sales tax exemption, based on how much a production spends here.

"We're delighted they made it out this way," said Massachusetts Film Office Executive Director Nick Paleologos of "The Surrogates." "One of the nicest things about this spring in terms of movies in Massachusetts is they're all over the place - Lowell, Worcester, Taunton, Medfield, Burlington, Woburn, Gloucester and now, Hopedale."

Phillips said he believes "The Surrogates" is the first movie to be filmed at the mill. Its production company contacted him last winter - about the same time, he said, a movie involving actor Ben Affleck also inquired about filming at the mill. That production will not happen, Phillips said.

"The Surrogates" is set in the near future, a time when humans interact through surrogate robots, according to published entertainment reports. Willis plays a cop who investigates the murders of other people's surrogates. The movie is based on a graphic novel of the same name and also stars Ving Rhames and Radha Mitchell, among others.
